Google Nest Audio Review: Best Smart Speaker for Google Home Users

Most $100 smart speakers sound like $100 smart speakers. Thin bass, boxy mids, fine for a podcast and not much else.

The Google Nest Audio breaks that pattern.

Behind its fabric shell sits a 75mm woofer and 19mm tweeter, and in side-by-side listening against the similarly priced Amazon Echo 4th Gen, the difference in bass extension and vocal clarity was obvious within seconds.

Google Assistant is the other reason it stands out. It answered general knowledge questions, from historical dates to quick math, more consistently than Alexa, since it draws directly on Google's search infrastructure.

It is not perfect. There is no built-in Zigbee radio, so controlling devices like Philips Hue or IKEA Tradfri needs a separate hub, something the Echo handles on its own. For Android households already living in Google Calendar and Maps, the Nest Audio still earns its place as the smarter buy.

The Nest Audio has no Zigbee hub. To control Zigbee devices: you need a Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, or a Google Home-compatible Zigbee hub (Samsung SmartThings hub, Philips Hue Bridge).
