Compressor: reduces dynamic range, making loud passages quieter and bringing up quiet passages. Produces more consistent audio level without manual gain riding.

De-esser: attenuates sibilance — the harsh "S" sounds that condensers often emphasize. Effective implementation that does not create the lispy artifact some de-essers produce.

Equalizer: 3-band EQ with frequency and gain control per band. Adequate for basic adjustment — not a replacement for a full parametric EQ but functional for voice.

One important limitation: Blue VO!CE processes the monitoring output but the effect on the recording depends on the DAW or application you use. In OBS, you apply VO!CE by selecting the processed output as the input source in OBS's audio settings, not just as the microphone source. Verify the routing before assuming VO!CE is active in your recording.

Mounting and Placement

The Yeti X ships with a desktop stand that elevates the capsule approximately 12cm above the desk surface. This places the capsule below mouth height for most seated users — not the optimal angle for cardioid recording.

A boom arm is strongly recommended. The Yeti X has a standard 5/8" threaded mount under the stand. Blue sells their own boom arm (Compass, approximately $100) or third-party arms (RODE PSA1, Elgato Wave) work equally well.

Optimal placement for cardioid recording: 10-15cm from mouth, slightly below mouth height angled upward, or at mouth height angled to the side to avoid direct plosive air.

Gain Setting

Target: peaks hitting -12 to -6 dBFS during normal speech. The LED meter shows green (good), yellow (approaching), and red (clipping). Keep peaks in the green-to-yellow range.

With VO!CE's compressor active, you can set gain slightly higher because the compressor prevents peaks from clipping. Without compression, be conservative with gain to leave headroom.

The gain control range is wide. Most home office environments require the knob set between 30-50% for typical speaking distances.
