Six weeks of repair testing went into this Loctite Super Glue Liquid Professional review, focused on where a low-viscosity cyanoacrylate earns its keep over thicker gel formulas. The 20g professional bottle sets in about 5 seconds on non-porous surfaces, the fastest we measured in the liquid CA category, and its thin consistency wicks by capillary action into tight, flat breaks on porcelain, glass, and machined metal. In two of five porcelain repairs, the resulting joint required more force to re-break than the original ceramic. The tradeoff is that the pure liquid formula runs on vertical surfaces and needs a horizontal orientation to apply cleanly, and the pin-cap applicator clogs faster than Gorilla's anti-clog design. The Case for Liquid CA Over Gel

Liquid and gel cyanoacrylate are not competing formulas — they are tools for different joint geometries.

Liquid CA has two technical advantages over gel:

  1. Bond strength per volume: without the thickening agent required to make gel viscous, liquid CA delivers more adhesive to the substrate per unit volume. On non-porous, tight-fitting joints, this translates to marginally higher ultimate bond strength.
  2. Wicking: liquid CA flows into gaps by capillary action. On a porcelain fracture with a tight, correctly aligned break, applying liquid CA to the outside edge wicks it throughout the joint line without requiring access to both surfaces.

Liquid CA has two practical disadvantages:

  1. Runs on vertical surfaces — you cannot apply it and then align the joint. Application requires the substrate horizontal or the liquid contained.
  2. Wicks into fingers and porous materials faster than gel — the same capillary action that makes it useful on joints also makes it bonding skin before substrate contact a more frequent problem.

Performance on Specific Substrates

Porcelain and ceramic: liquid CA is the correct adhesive. A porcelain repair (mug handle, tile, figurine) has a tight break line. Apply liquid to one surface, hold the break together, and the CA wicks throughout. Set time 5-10 seconds. The joint is essentially invisible after cure. In our tests, porcelain joints repaired with liquid CA required more force to re-break than the original ceramic in two of five tests.

Glass: similar to porcelain. Liquid CA bonds glass well if the glass surface is clean (no silicone residue, oil, or moisture). UV-cure glass adhesives produce clearer bonds, but liquid CA is faster and adequate where optical clarity is not critical.

Machined metal: liquid CA applied to clean, close-tolerance metal surfaces bonds quickly and strongly. For high-load or temperature-cycling metal bonds, two-part epoxy remains the engineering-grade choice. For small parts at room temperature: liquid CA is faster and sufficient.

Hard plastic (ABS, polycarbonate): bonds well. Same limitation as all CA: will not bond polypropylene or polyethylene without a primer.

Wood: liquid CA is faster than PVA for small-area spot repairs where clamping is impractical, but it wicks into the wood grain aggressively. Apply in very small amounts and expect some surface bleeding on porous woods.

The Professional Bottle
