If your chisel is tearing the wood instead of slicing it, and you're leaning on it harder than feels right, the tool isn't the problem. The edge is.
Learning how to sharpen chisels properly is the difference between clean shavings off end grain and a rough, torn surface. It's also a safety issue: a dull chisel under heavy pressure is the one that slips.
The actual test professionals use is simple. A properly sharpened chisel shaves hair off your arm.
Getting there, whether freehand or with a honing guide, takes about 15 minutes to learn. After that, touching up an edge between uses takes 2 to 3 minutes, and this guide covers the stone grits, bevel angles, and full process to get you there.
Why Sharpening Matters
A dull chisel does not cut wood -- it compresses and tears fibers. The result is a rough surface, inaccurate cuts, and more physical effort. More effort means more opportunity for the chisel to slip and cause injury.
A properly sharpened chisel shaves hair from your arm. This is the standard test used by professional woodworkers. If the chisel does not shave arm hair, it is not sharp enough for quality work.
The good news: sharpening is a learnable skill that takes 15 minutes once the process is understood. After that, touching up a chisel takes 2 to 3 minutes.
The Geometry of a Chisel Bevel
A chisel has two faces:
- Back: the flat face. Must be perfectly flat and polished near the cutting edge.

Oil stones: traditional Western sharpening stones. Use honing oil. Slower than waterstones but last virtually forever.
Diamond plates: steel plates with industrial diamond abrasive. Very fast material removal. Do not hollow. Correct for flattening waterstones and for quick establishment of bevel geometry.
Grits:
- 120 to 220 grit: removing metal, establishing the bevel angle (grinding)

Sharpening Equipment Options
Freehand on waterstones: the traditional method. No special equipment beyond stones. Takes practice to maintain a consistent angle. Most experienced hand tool woodworkers use freehand.
Honing guide: a roller jig that holds the chisel at a fixed angle against the stone. Eliminates the angle-maintenance skill requirement. More consistent results for beginners. The Veritas Mk.II and Lie-Nielsen honing guides are the most recommended.
Side-clamping honing guide (Eclipse style): the basic, inexpensive honing guide. Works well for beginners. Less expensive than the Veritas.

The Sharpening Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Flatten the Back
The back of the chisel must be flat near the cutting edge. Place the chisel back-face-down on the 1,000 grit stone. Move it in circles or figure-8 patterns. Lift after each stroke to see where material is removing.
Continue until the back shows a flat, uniformly scratched surface from the cutting edge back at least 1/4 inch. This is a one-time operation on a new chisel. After this, only touch up the very tip near the edge.
Step 2: Establish the Bevel Angle
If using a honing guide: set the chisel projection distance according to the guide manufacturer's chart for 25 degrees.
If going freehand: place the chisel bevel-side-down at 25 degrees on the stone. To estimate 25 degrees: with the back flat on the stone, raise the heel of the bevel until only the middle of the bevel (not the tip) contacts the stone. For a 30-degree secondary bevel, raise slightly more until just the tip contacts.
Work on the coarse stone first. Make 20 to 30 strokes until a wire edge (burr) forms on the back of the chisel. You can feel this with a fingertip -- it is a slight roughness or catch when sliding from the back toward the edge.
Step 3: Remove the Wire Edge
Once the wire edge forms, move to the fine stone. Alternate a few strokes on the bevel with a single stroke flat on the back. The back stroke removes the wire edge that forms after each bevel stroke. Continue until the back and bevel are both refined.
Step 4: Strop
Stropping is the final step and the most important. Draw the chisel backward (bevel-side-down, then back-side-down) across a leather strop loaded with polishing compound (green chromium oxide compound is standard).
The strop removes the final wire edge and polishes the two faces to a mirror surface. This is what produces a shaving-sharp edge.
Test: draw the edge across arm hair. A sharp chisel shaves hair cleanly. If not, strop more.
Maintaining Sharpness During a Session
A chisel dulls within 20 to 30 minutes of continuous use in hardwood. Stop and strop when the chisel begins to feel less crisp. Stropping alone restores the edge for several more minutes of use without returning to the stone.
When stropping no longer restores the edge, return to the fine stone for two to three minutes of honing.
Problem: Chipped Edge
A chipped edge requires grinding material away until the chip is gone, then resharpening. On a coarse stone, grind until the flat spot left by the chip disappears. Then proceed through the full sharpening sequence.
Prevention: do not pry with a chisel. Prying creates a bending force that chips the brittle carbide-hard steel near the edge. Use the chisel only for cutting -- it is not a pry bar.
