Fix a desk lamp that flickers, dims, or pulses. Covers loose connections, dimmer incompatibility, and LED driver issues for LED and fluorescent desk lamps.
A flickering desk lamp is more annoying to diagnose than it should be, mostly because the fix depends entirely on what's causing it.
Loose bulb, bad outlet, an incompatible dimmer, a dying LED driver. Each has a different fix, and guessing wastes time.
Work through the checks below in order, and you'll usually land on the cause within a few minutes.
Check 1: Tighten the Bulb or Connection
For lamps with replaceable bulbs: turn off the lamp, let it cool, then remove and firmly reseat the bulb. A loose bulb creates an intermittent connection that causes flickering.
For integrated LED lamps: check that the power cable is fully seated at both the lamp and the outlet. Wiggle the cable near the lamp's connection point — if the flickering changes with cable movement, the internal connection is loose and the lamp needs repair or replacement.
Check 2: Test on a Different Outlet
Electrical noise from other devices on the same circuit can cause LED lamp flickering. Plug the lamp into an outlet on a different circuit (different room, or noticeably different location in the same room). If the flickering stops, the original outlet or circuit has interference.
Check 3: Check Dimmer Compatibility
If the lamp is on a circuit controlled by a dimmer switch, the dimmer may be incompatible with LED lamps. Traditional dimmer switches are designed for incandescent bulbs and use a different control method than LED-compatible dimmers.
Test: plug the lamp directly into a non-dimmed outlet. If it stops flickering, the dimmer is the cause. Replace with an LED-compatible dimmer (specifically marketed as compatible with LED lamps).
Check 4: Rule Out Heat-Related Dimming
Some LED lamps dim visibly as they heat up in the first 15-30 minutes of use. This is normal thermal regulation, not a fault. If the lamp stabilizes at a slightly lower brightness after warm-up and then holds steady, this is expected behavior.
If the lamp continues to dim progressively after the warm-up period, the LED driver is overheating or failing.
Check 5: Replace the Lamp
LED driver failure is the most common cause of flickering in LED desk lamps that are more than 2-3 years old. The driver is the electronic component that converts mains voltage to the stable low-voltage DC that LEDs require. Driver replacement is typically not cost-effective on consumer lamps — a new lamp is more practical.
