Before you cut a single piece of plywood for a cabinet, you have to decide between two construction methods that lead to very different results.
Face frame construction is the North American standard: a solid hardwood frame glued over a plywood box to cover raw edges and give a finished look. Frameless, the European style used by IKEA, skips the frame entirely for a more modern, space-efficient box.
That one decision shapes every joint, every hardware choice, and how forgiving the build is of small mistakes.

Cabinet Construction Methods
There are two fundamental approaches to cabinet building:
Face frame cabinets: a solid wood frame (typically 3/4-inch hardwood) is built separately and glued to the front of the plywood box. Face frames are the North American standard for kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The face frame covers the plywood box edges and provides a finished appearance.
Frameless cabinets (European style): no face frame -- the cabinet is a simple plywood or MDF box, finished with edge banding on exposed edges. Doors and drawers mount directly to the box using concealed hinges. The European standard used by IKEA and most modern cabinetmakers.
For a beginning cabinetmaker, frameless construction is simpler. For the traditional American kitchen cabinet look, face frame is the standard.

Joinery Options for Cabinet Boxes
Pocket screws (Kreg system): the fastest method. Drill angled pocket holes in the mating parts and drive screws to pull them together. Correct for frameless cabinet construction where the joints are hidden. The most common method for production cabinet making.
Dado joints: cut a groove (dado) in the sides to receive the top and bottom. The dado provides mechanical alignment and adds strength over pocket screws. The correct method for high-quality cabinet construction.
Biscuits or Dominos: Festool Domino or biscuit joiner cuts slots for alignment. Fast and accurate.
Butt joints with screws: the simplest method -- parts butted together and screwed. Acceptable for painted utility cabinets. Not appropriate for fine furniture cabinetry.
For kitchen and bathroom cabinets, pocket screws or dadoes are the correct joinery.
Face Frame Construction
A face frame consists of:

Wall cabinet installation:
