A flat, heavy, rigid bench built at the correct height, with the right vise and clamping setup, makes everything else in the shop easier. Get the height wrong and no amount of skill compensates for it.

The Most Important Tool in the Shop
A workbench is the foundation of all other work. A flat, heavy, rigid bench with correct height and adequate vise and clamping options makes every other task easier. A poor bench makes work harder and less accurate regardless of the quality of the tools.
The correct workbench depends on:
- How you primarily work (hand tools vs power tools)
- Your height
- Your shop's floor space
- Your budget and skills
Workbench Height
Workbench height is the most important dimension to get right. The wrong height causes fatigue, back strain, and poor planing technique.
General rules:
- Hand tool work (planing, chopping): bench top at wrist height with arms hanging naturally at your sides. Typically 32 to 34 inches for average height woodworkers.
- Power tool and assembly work: bench top at elbow height with arms bent at 90 degrees. Typically 35 to 38 inches.
- If you do both: lean toward the lower (hand tool) height. You can raise parts with supplemental surfaces; you cannot lower a fixed bench.
To find your correct hand tool height: stand straight, measure from the floor to your palm with your arm hanging and your wrist bent up naturally. This is typically the correct hand tool bench height.
Workbench Designs
Roubo Workbench
The 18th-century French design illustrated in Roubo's "L'Art du Menuisier." The design has become the most popular hand tool workbench in American woodworking over the past 20 years.
Key features:
- Very heavy and thick top (typically 4 to 5 inches thick, hard maple or beech)
- Face vise on the left end of the front face
- Leg vise or twin screw vise on the left leg
- Tail vise on the right end
- Planing stop (small block on the bench top surface)
Correct for: hand tool woodworking, furniture makers who do significant hand planing.
Top material: hard maple (best), beech, or southern yellow pine.

Nicholson Workbench
A simpler English design with a wide apron on the front face that replaces complex vise joinery.

Workbench in a Day (Hybrid)
A simplified bench designed for quick construction using standard lumber.

- 2x6 or 4x4 construction lumber top
- Simple base from dimensional lumber
- Basic face vise
Correct for: beginners who need a functional bench quickly, or shops where a temporary bench is needed before building the permanent bench.
Cost: under $200 in materials.
Split-Top Roubo
A variation of the Roubo with the top split lengthwise into two sections with a gap in the middle.

- Two thick slabs with a 1 to 2-inch gap between them
- Track system for accessories in the gap

Top Thickness
Minimum for hand tool work: 3 inches. This provides enough mass for planing stability.
Optimal for a Roubo: 4 to 5 inches. A heavy, thick top dampens vibration and resists rocking under mallet work.
For power tool and assembly benches: 2 to 3 inches is adequate. Power work does not require the mass that hand planing needs.
Wood Selection for the Top
Hard maple: the best choice for any hand tool bench top. Janka hardness 1450 -- resists denting from dropped tools and mallet strikes. White color shows glue lines and layout marks clearly.
Beech: the traditional European bench wood. Similar hardness to hard maple. More commonly used in traditional European workbench designs.
Southern yellow pine: the correct budget top material. SYP has a Janka hardness of 1225 -- adequate for a bench top. Much less expensive than hard maple. Will dent more easily and show wear faster.
Douglas fir: softer than SYP (Janka 620) but widely available and workable. Correct for a starter bench before building a maple top.
Vise Selection and Placement
Face Vise
The most commonly used vise. Mounts on the left end of the front face for right-handed woodworkers. Used for holding boards vertically for edge planing, sawing, and chopping.
Common face vise options: Yost 750-DI, Veritas Quick Release, Lee Valley Twin Screw.
Leg Vise
A large vise mounted on the left front leg of the bench. The most powerful clamping vise design -- can hold full-length boards and provide tremendous clamping force.
Disadvantage: requires a wooden screw or high-quality metal screw -- significant cost and complexity.
Tail Vise
Mounts on the right end of the bench top. Works with bench dogs to hold boards flat on the bench surface for planing. The most expensive and complex vise to install.
Alternative: the wagon vise is a simpler form of tail vise used on split-top Roubo designs.
Dog Holes
Bench dogs are wooden or metal pegs that project above the bench surface and are used with the tail vise or a hold-fast to clamp boards flat on the top.
Dog holes are round (for round dogs) or rectangular (for rectangular dogs). Space them at 4-inch intervals along the bench front and in a row along the bench front near the front edge.
Round dog holes are easier to drill and are compatible with both metal and shop-made wooden round dogs.
