Chisel Types

Mortise chisels: thick, square-sided. Built to withstand mallet blows in mortise chopping without flexing. Longer, square sides provide more control in the mortise walls.

Steel Types in Chisels

O1 (oil-hardened): traditional tool steel. Sharpens easily to a very fine edge. Easier to hone on water stones and oil stones than A2. Edge is slightly less durable than A2 in hard use.

A2 (air-hardened): harder, more wear-resistant than O1. Holds the edge longer in heavy use but is harder to sharpen -- requires more strokes and coarser stones. The Lie-Nielsen standard.

PMV-11 (Veritas proprietary alloy): Veritas's tool steel, produced for Lee Valley. Falls between O1 and A2 in ease of sharpening and edge retention.

Chrome vanadium: the budget alloy used in most hardware store chisels. Lower hardness, easier to sharpen, shorter edge retention.

For woodworkers who sharpen on water stones: O1 or PMV-11 sharpens most easily. For woodworkers with diamond plates: A2 is practical.

Handle Materials

Hornbeam: the preferred handle wood. Dense, shock-resistant, and handles mallet strikes without splitting.

Boxwood: traditional English chisel handle material. Dense and durable.

Beech: the most common. Adequate for furniture work but less shock-resistant than hornbeam.

Plastic and rubber: durable and impact-resistant. Less comfortable in extended paring use.

Essential Chisel Maintenance

Flattening the back: the back of a new chisel must be flat near the cutting edge. Most new chisels, including premium brands, require some flattening. Do this once -- subsequent sharpening only touches the bevel.

Honing the bevel: sharpen the bevel on water stones or diamond plates through progressively finer grits. End with a leather strop loaded with polishing compound.

Protecting the edge: store chisels with edge guards or in a tool roll. A chipped chisel requires grinding to remove the chip before resharpening.
