Moisture cycles: rain wets the wood, then sun dries it. This repeated expansion and contraction causes paint to crack and peel, and checks (small cracks) to develop at the surface.
UV degradation: sunlight degrades lignin (the binding agent in wood fiber), turning wood gray and brittle at the surface.
Fungal decay: any wood that stays consistently damp decays. End grain is the most vulnerable -- trim joints, butt ends, and any area where water ponds are the first to fail.

1. Western Red Cedar

Woods to Avoid for Exterior Trim

Paint fails quickly due to resin bleed-through and wood movement. Will rot within 5 to 10 years in wet climates without excellent maintenance.
Douglas fir: stronger than pine but has visible grain that creates paint adhesion problems at the pronounced growth ring boundaries. Better than pine but still inferior to cedar for trim durability.
Red oak: open grain that absorbs and holds water, leading to rapid decay. Never appropriate for exterior use.
MDF and particleboard: not suitable for any exterior application. Absorb water and swell immediately.
