Router Types

Full-size plunge router: 2 to 3.5 HP, spring-loaded plunge mechanism that allows the bit to be lowered into the workpiece from above. Both handheld and router table capable. The most versatile single router.

Fixed-base router: no plunge mechanism. Better for router table use because the fixed base eliminates the plunge mechanism height. Most cannot plunge during a cut.

Compact/trim router: 1 to 1.5 HP, small form factor. For edge profiling, pattern routing, and small-diameter bits. Cannot handle large bits or heavy cuts.

Router Table vs Handheld

Router table use: the router is mounted upside down under a table, with the bit protruding through a hole in the table. The operator feeds the workpiece across the table against a fence or bearing guide. More accurate and safer for large profiles, repeated cuts, and small parts.

Handheld use: the operator moves the router along the workpiece. More versatile for large panels, assembled furniture, and cuts that cannot be done on a table.

Collet Sizes

1/4-inch collet: for 1/4-inch shank router bits. Standard for all compact routers and many mid-size routers.

1/2-inch collet: for 1/2-inch shank bits. Required for large-diameter and high-load bits. Provides more secure grip and reduces bit deflection. Any router doing heavy work (panel raisers, large profile bits) should have a 1/2-inch collet.

Quality full-size routers include both 1/4 and 1/2-inch collets.

Router Speed Selection

Higher RPM is not always better. Large-diameter bits require lower RPM to keep the peripheral speed (feet per minute at the bit edge) in the safe range. Running a large bit at maximum speed causes burning and is dangerous.
