Best Jointer 2026: 8 Benchtop and Stationary Jointers

A warped board doesn't get less warped just because you cut it to length. Every downstream cut, every glue joint, inherits whatever twist and bow the rough lumber started with.

A jointer is the machine that fixes this at the source, flattening one face and squaring one edge before anything else touches the board.

We compared eight jointers, from 6-inch benchtop units under $300 to full 8-inch stationary machines running well past $4,000.

Its helical cutterhead, made up of indexable carbide inserts rather than a single straight knife, leaves a smoother finish with less tearout, and the 8-inch capacity handles wide hardwood stock that most benchtop machines simply can't.

What a Jointer Does

A jointer flattens one face of a board and squares one edge to that face, giving a reference surface for the planer and table saw to work from. Without a flat, square reference, every subsequent cut compounds the original board's warp or twist. A jointer is not optional for anyone working with rough-sawn lumber.

6-Inch vs 8-Inch Jointers

A 6-inch jointer handles the majority of furniture-scale stock. An 8-inch jointer adds capacity for wider panels and tabletops in a single pass, avoiding the need to rip and rejoin wide boards. Most home shops are well served by a 6-inch machine; production and furniture shops that regularly work wide stock benefit from the 8-inch capacity.

Straight Knife vs Helical Cutterhead

Straight knife cutterheads are cheaper and simpler to adjust but produce more tearout in figured or interlocked grain and need more frequent full-width sharpening. Helical (spiral) cutterheads use small indexable carbide inserts arranged in a spiral, cutting with a shearing action that reduces tearout and noise. When one insert dulls or chips, it rotates or is replaced individually rather than resharpening the whole knife.

Table Length and Flatness

Longer infeed and outfeed tables give better control on longer boards, reducing the tendency for a board to dip at the beginning or end of a pass (snipe). Cast iron tables hold their flatness far better over time than stamped aluminum, which is one reason cast iron machines command a higher price.

Common Jointer Mistakes

Trying to remove too much material in one pass. Take light passes (1/16 inch or less) and multiple passes rather than forcing a deep cut that bogs the motor and tears the grain.

Skipping the infeed table height check. Infeed table height sets depth of cut; if it drifts, results become inconsistent board to board.

Jointing a badly twisted board without first rough-cutting it to a shorter length. A jointer flattens relative to its table length; a long, badly twisted board may need to be crosscut into shorter sections first.

Other Configurations Worth Knowing About

Not every shop fits a standalone 6-inch or 8-inch cast-iron jointer. Two alternative configurations are worth considering:
