What a Card Scraper Does
A card scraper removes very thin shavings -- thinner than a hand plane. Used correctly, it leaves a surface ready for finish without any sanding. The card scraper is the correct tool after hand planing when:

The result is a tiny hook (burr) rolled over the edge. The hook is the cutting edge.
Using a Card Scraper
Hold the scraper with both thumbs behind the lower edge and push forward while flexing the center slightly (the flex concentrates cutting pressure in the middle rather than dragging the corners). Angle the scraper slightly forward in the direction of travel.
The correct angle produces thin shavings (not dust). If you are producing dust, the scraper is not cutting -- the hook is missing, insufficient, or worn.
Scrapers lose their hook quickly -- turn a new burr when the scraper stops producing shavings.
