Wireless Charger Buying Guide 2026: MagSafe, Qi2, and Qi Explained

Wireless charger marketing assumes you know which standard your phone uses. Most buyers do not, which leads to buying a 15W charger that charges their phone at 7.5W and not understanding why.
Your Phone's Wireless Standard
The most important factor in choosing a wireless charger is identifying your phone's wireless charging protocol:
Apple iPhones:
- iPhone 15 and 15 Pro/Max: Qi2 and MagSafe, 15W max
- iPhone 14 and 14 Pro/Max: MagSafe, 15W max (Qi2 devices also work at 15W)
- iPhone 13 series: MagSafe, 15W max
- iPhone 12 series: MagSafe, 15W max
- iPhone 11 and earlier: standard Qi, 7.5W max
- Any iPhone with non-MagSafe charger: 7.5W max (cannot charge at 15W without MagSafe/Qi2)
Samsung Galaxy S-series:
- Galaxy S20 and newer: Samsung Wireless PowerShare (15W with Samsung charger, 10-15W with compatible third-party)
- Older Galaxy: 5-15W depending on model
Google Pixel:
- Pixel 7 and newer: standard Qi plus Pixel Stand support (23W with Pixel Stand 2nd Gen only)
- Older Pixel: standard Qi, 5-12W
Most other Android phones: standard Qi, 5-15W depending on phone's capability
The Speed Hierarchy
From fastest to slowest wireless charging:
- MagSafe/Qi2: 15W (iPhone 12+)
- Samsung Fast Wireless: 15W (Galaxy S20+)
- Standard Qi max: 10-15W (phone-dependent)
- Standard Qi: 7.5W (iPhones on non-MagSafe chargers)
- Standard Qi: 5W (older phones and generic chargers)
For reference: wired USB-C PD charges iPhone 15 at 27W — nearly twice the speed of MagSafe wireless. Wireless charging convenience comes with speed tradeoff.
Certified vs Uncertified: What MFi Means
Apple's MFi (Made for iPhone) certification requires third-party manufacturers to use Apple's licensing and meet Apple's technical specifications. For wireless charging:
MFi-certified MagSafe charger: guaranteed to charge iPhone at 15W. Apple tests and certifies the product.
Qi2 charger (not MFi): charges iPhone 13+ at 15W via the open Qi2 standard, which Apple participated in developing. Does not require Apple certification to deliver 15W. Many Anker and other brand Qi2 chargers work at 15W without MFi.
Standard Qi charger (not MagSafe, not Qi2): charges any iPhone at 7.5W maximum, regardless of the charger's rated wattage. A "15W Qi charger" charges an iPhone at 7.5W.
The practical takeaway: for iPhone fast wireless charging, look for either "MagSafe compatible" with MFi certification, or "Qi2" from a reputable brand. Standard Qi chargers will not charge an iPhone at more than 7.5W.
The Power Adapter Requirement
Wireless chargers themselves are passive coils — they need power from a wall adapter or USB port:
- A 15W MagSafe charger connected to a 5W USB-A port: charges at 5W (port is the bottleneck)
- A 15W MagSafe charger connected to a 20W USB-C PD adapter: charges at 15W
For MagSafe at full 15W:
- Use a 20W USB-C PD adapter minimum (Apple's own 20W USB-C adapter, Anker 20W, etc.)
- Most 5W USB-A adapters limit wireless charging below maximum speed
For Samsung 15W fast wireless:
- Samsung's own fast wireless charger includes an appropriate adapter
- Third-party chargers often require specific adapters — check the product spec
Many wireless charger listings do not include a power adapter. This is a cost omission, not a product deficiency — wall adapters are widely available. Confirm you have an appropriate adapter before expecting maximum speed.
Multi-Device Charging Stations
3-in-1 and 4-in-1 charging stations simultaneously charge phone, watch, and earbuds:
Apple ecosystem 3-in-1 stations: iPhone (15W MagSafe) + Apple Watch (5W) + AirPods (5W Qi). The Belkin Boost Charge Pro and similar products provide this. Price range: $120-180.
Universal multi-device chargers: phone Qi pad + separate Qi pad for earbuds + sometimes watch charger. Less useful for Apple Watch (requires specific Apple Watch charger hardware — only Apple Watch puck charges Apple Watch).
For Apple Watch charging: the watch requires Apple's MFi-certified Apple Watch charger hardware. Generic Qi pads do not charge Apple Watch. Any 3-in-1 charging station that charges Apple Watch includes an Apple Watch charging puck.
Wired vs Wireless: When to Choose Each
Use wireless charging for:
- Nightstand use — set and forget without searching for a cable in the dark
- Desk use — charge between uses without connecting a cable each time
- Multiple device charging simultaneously
Use wired charging (USB-C PD) for:
- Emergency quick charge — wired at 27W charges iPhone twice as fast as MagSafe at 15W
- Travel — one USB-C cable works for all devices; wireless charging pads add weight
- Long-term battery health — wired charging generates less heat than wireless
For most users: a wireless charger at the desk and bedside, wired charging when traveling. This combines the convenience of wireless in fixed locations with the speed and simplicity of wired when mobility matters.
