TP-Link Archer AX21 Review: Best Budget WiFi 6 Router

Ask around for a budget router recommendation and one name keeps coming up.

The TP-Link Archer AX21 has become the default answer for a simple reason: it's the cheapest way to get real WiFi 6 in your home.

We spent 4 months running it in a 1,200 sq ft apartment with 20 to 25 connected devices to see if the popularity holds up under everyday load.

At $99 with 4 external antennas and 1800 Mbps total throughput, it's not a spec-sheet monster. It's just reliable where it counts.

Real-World Performance

In a 1,200 sq ft apartment with 20-25 connected devices:

5GHz throughput at 15 feet from the router: 650 Mbps average
5GHz throughput at 30 feet through 1 wall: 380 Mbps average
5GHz throughput at 50 feet through 2 walls: 160 Mbps average

For a 400 Mbps internet plan, these speeds are never the bottleneck at any point in the apartment. For a gigabit plan, a single device at distance would not receive full gigabit — but for a 20-device household, no single device is using the full connection anyway.

Multi-Device Handling

WiFi 6 OFDMA is the real differentiator from WiFi 5 at this price. During peak household usage (5 devices streaming simultaneously, multiple phones), throughput remained stable without the congestion visible on an older WiFi 5 router.

App Quality

The Tether app is well-designed for a consumer router. Guest network creation takes one tap. Device blocking for parental controls is straightforward. The interface is cleaner than the web-based admin panel and adequate for all common management tasks.

Verdict

Best budget router. The AX21 handles small homes, apartments, and typical device counts reliably at a price that no longer requires compromise.
