The Thermaltake Massive TM is a 17-inch cooling pad with a 200mm fan. We tested it on gaming laptops for 40 hours to measure noise levels, temperature reduction, and build quality.
The Thermaltake Massive TM is built around a simple premise: a single large fan is quieter than multiple small fans moving the same amount of air. The physics back this up — larger fans move the same volume at lower RPM, which reduces noise.
After 40 hours of testing on an ASUS ROG laptop and a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro, here is what the premise delivers in practice.
Cooling Performance
On the ASUS ROG (17-inch, large bottom intake):
- CPU peak temperature dropped from 92°C to 82°C under sustained gaming load
- GPU temperature dropped from 87°C to 78°C
- No thermal throttling observed during the 30-minute test sessions
On the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (15.6-inch, small bottom vents):
- CPU temperature dropped only 4°C
- The smaller vents limit how much the external fan can assist
The 200mm fan's coverage is optimized for 15-17 inch laptops. At 13-14 inch sizes, the fan extends beyond the laptop footprint and much of the airflow misses the intake area.
Noise Level
Measured at 30cm distance:
- Low speed: 18dB (quieter than typical office ambient noise)
- High speed: 21dB (comparable to a quiet mechanical keyboard)
For comparison, the same laptop's internal fans under gaming load measured 38dB. The cooling pad's fan is effectively inaudible relative to the laptop itself.
Build Quality
The plastic housing is functional but not premium. The height adjustment mechanism uses notched positions that lock firmly — it has not shifted or loosened during testing. The rubber anti-slip pads on the bottom keep it stationary on desk surfaces.
The USB hub provides two USB 2.0 ports. At USB 2.0 speeds (480Mbps theoretical, ~40MB/s practical), it is suitable for mice, keyboards, and phone charging, but not for external storage.
Verdict
The Thermaltake Massive TM does its job well for users with 15-17 inch laptops who want quiet cooling. The 200mm fan design is genuinely quieter than multi-fan competitors at comparable airflow. The plastic build and USB 2.0 hub are the main compromises at this price point.
