Pressure Cooker Not Coming to Pressure: 8 Causes and Fixes

Twenty minutes in and the display still reads "On." Or worse, it flashes "Burn" and cancels the whole cook. Either way, your Instant Pot is stalling somewhere between plugged in and actually pressurized.

That's a different problem than a cooker that shows zero pressure activity at all, and on Instant Pot models specifically, it usually traces back to one of eight fixable issues.

On older Duo and Lux models, the steam release valve has to be manually turned to Sealing before starting; newer Duo Evo Plus and Pro models auto-seal and skip that step. A full 6-quart pot typically needs 10 to 15 minutes to pressurize, or up to 30 with frozen food, so some of this is just normal timing, not a fault.

Past the valve, a damaged sealing ring is the next most frequent cause, followed by too little thin liquid or a float valve blocked by food debris. Each fix below is ordered from quickest to check to most involved.

The Sealing Ring: Most Common Culprit

In electric pressure cooker troubleshooting, the sealing ring causes or contributes to the majority of pressurization failures. This is the first thing to check because it is the most common cause and the easiest to diagnose.

Signs that the sealing ring needs replacement:

  • Visible cracks or splits (even hairline cracks prevent full sealing)
  • The ring has flattened and no longer springs back to its curved shape
  • Persistent steam escaping from the lid edge even when the valve is in the sealing position
  • Cooking smells from previous meals embedded in the ring (a cosmetic issue, not a sealing issue — but older rings are more prone to damage)

Instant Pot sealing rings should be replaced every 12 to 18 months for regular daily users. Replacement rings cost $8 to $15 for a pack of 2. Keep a spare — a failed sealing ring at the wrong moment eliminates the ability to pressure cook until a replacement arrives.

Stovetop Pressure Cooker Pressurization Issues

Stovetop pressure cookers fail to pressurize for different reasons than electric models:

Gasket failure: the rubber gasket in the lid performs the same sealing function as the Instant Pot sealing ring. Inspect it for cracks or deformation. Replace annually for regular use.

Incorrect lid alignment: stovetop lids must align with the pot handle to seat correctly. Confirm the lid lock is engaged completely.

Heat too low: stovetop pressure cookers require sufficient heat to generate pressure. If pressure does not build within 5 to 10 minutes on medium-high heat, increase heat. Once pressure is reached, reduce to maintain it — do not leave at maximum heat throughout.

Pressure relief valve clogged: stovetop pressure cookers have a small pressure relief valve (usually a rubber plug in the lid) that can clog with mineral deposits or food debris. Remove and inspect the valve according to the manufacturer's instructions.
