The LG 27GP850-B is the gaming monitor I would buy for a 1440p IPS setup under $400. The IPS panel at 165Hz is visibly better than VA alternatives in competitive gaming — response time and color consistency make a real difference at this resolution. The USB-C 90W charging is an underrated feature for laptop desk setups.

Its Nano IPS panel runs at 165Hz with 98% DCI-P3 coverage, wide enough for photo editing and video color grading between gaming sessions, and both G-Sync Compatible and FreeSync Premium Pro certifications mean it pairs cleanly with NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards. A 90W USB-C port doubles as a laptop charger, letting a single cable replace a separate power brick on a mixed work-and-gaming desk. The panel earned a 9.1 editorial score across our testing, with IPS glow in dark corners and the lack of a swiveling stand standing out as the main tradeoffs at this price.

Panel Assessment

The 27GP850-B uses LG's Nano IPS panel technology with extended color gamut (98% DCI-P3). In practice, this means colors are saturated and accurate rather than the washed-out presentation common in entry-level IPS panels.

Response Time Reality

The specification says 1ms GtG. The actual measured average GtG response time at default overdrive settings is approximately 5.3ms across all gray-to-gray transitions. At the fastest overdrive setting (Level 5 in the OSD), average GtG drops to approximately 3.8ms with occasional inverse ghosting on bright elements against dark backgrounds.

In gaming practice: at Level 3 overdrive (the sweet spot), fast-moving elements in competitive games are sharp without visible trailing or inverse ghosting. Compared to VA panels at similar prices, the IPS panel produces visibly cleaner motion in fast-moving scenes.

The 1ms marketing figure applies to a small subset of transitions at maximum overdrive. The practical response time is 4-5ms, which is excellent but not the spec sheet number.

165Hz in Practice

At 1440p/165Hz with an RTX 4070, we achieved 165fps in CS2 on mid-high settings, approximately 130fps average in Apex Legends on high, and 90-110fps in more demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077 on high (no path tracing).

For competitive games, 165Hz at 1440p is achievable with current mid-range GPUs. For demanding AAA titles, average frame rates of 100-130fps are more realistic — still well above 60fps and visible through VRR up to 165Hz.

NVIDIA DLSS 3 (Frame Generation) can push frame rates above the native rendering limit, but the latency implications of Frame Generation make it less suitable for competitive play.

USB-C and KVM

The USB-C port delivers 90W power delivery to the connected device and carries DisplayPort signal (4K@60Hz or 1440p@165Hz). This makes it suitable for:

On the 27GP850-B at viewing distance of 60-80cm, the glow is visible in the corners when displaying a full black test image, but not distracting in normal gaming content (which is rarely all-black).

The glow is angle-dependent: at direct head-on viewing position, it is less visible than from slightly off-axis. In our evaluation, it was a non-issue during regular gaming and occasional inconvenience during full-screen cinematic cutscenes with black bars.

If IPS glow is a major concern, VA panels have better dark uniformity at the cost of other characteristics.

Stand Ergonomics

The included stand offers height adjustment (0-110mm range), tilt (-5 to 15 degrees), and a pivot foot for horizontal repositioning. It does not offer dedicated swivel adjustment — horizontal positioning requires repositioning the entire stand foot rather than rotating the display on a swivel joint.

For most desk setups, this is not a significant limitation. For setups where the monitor needs to be easily angled for different people or use cases, a monitor arm provides better flexibility.

A 100x100mm VESA mount on the back accommodates standard monitor arms if the included stand is not adequate.

Value Assessment

At $350, the 27GP850-B competes against 1440p VA panels at $250-300 and 1080p IPS panels at $200-250. The $100 premium over VA alternatives at the same resolution and refresh rate is justified by:
