An Instant Pot that will not build pressure is almost always a quick fix rather than a sign of a broken unit, and working through a short checklist resolves the vast majority of cases within minutes. The single most common cause is the pressure release valve sitting in the Venting position instead of Sealing, often left over from the previous cook or bumped accidentally when the lid was closed. Right behind that: a sealing ring that has shifted out of its groove, which prevents the lid from forming an airtight seal against the insert rim, and simply not adding the required 1 cup minimum of thin liquid needed to generate steam. Other culprits include a stuck float valve, a triggered burn sensor from thick sauce touching the element directly, an insert filled past the max line, or a clogged anti-block shield. These eight fixes cover what to check, in order, before assuming the unit itself has failed.

Why the Instant Pot Is Not Coming to Pressure

The most common cause by far: the pressure release valve is in the Venting position. Check this first before anything else. Turn the valve to Sealing and try again.

Second most common: the sealing ring is not seated in the lid groove. Remove the lid, look at the underside, and press the ring firmly into position around the full circumference.

Third: insufficient liquid — the unit needs at least 1 cup of thin liquid to generate steam.

The Diagnosis Checklist

Run through these in order before assuming the unit is defective:

  1. Pressure release valve in Sealing position
  2. Sealing ring fully seated in lid groove
  3. At least 1 cup of thin liquid in the insert
  4. No burn notice showing on display
  5. Lid fully locked (rotated to the locked position)
  6. Insert fill below the max line (2/3 for most foods, 1/2 for expanding foods)
  7. Float valve moves freely (not blocked by debris)
  8. Anti-block shield clean and installed

If all eight check out and the unit still does not build pressure: contact Instant Pot customer support. The unit may have a faulty sealing ring, damaged lid, or heating element issue that requires replacement.
