Monitor light bars differ from desk lamps in one defining way: they use an asymmetric lens that directs light downward toward the desk surface, not forward toward the screen.
Why Asymmetric Lens Design Matters
A conventional desk lamp positioned near a monitor creates glare — reflections on the screen surface that reduce contrast and cause eye strain. The solution most people use (repositioning the lamp away from the monitor) reduces illumination on the work area.
Monitor light bars solve this with lens optics that direct light at an angle that falls on the desk without hitting the screen face. The result: the desk surface directly below the monitor is illuminated, the screen shows no reflection from the light source.
